Can Epidural Injection Cause Chronic Back Pain?

After becoming a dad for the third time, it’s still an amazing experience for myself; and my wife also feels the same: that pregnancy and motherhood can be a wonderful experience, though it sometimes may come with some discomforts, inconveniences and pains.

Sometimes some patients experience soreness and pain where the epidural injection was done, and that may lead them to think that it’s the epidural injection that started their long term back pain. Let’s first clarify that.

There’s research that compared mothers who received epidural analgesic injection versus receiving other forms of pain management or relief solutions and the study shows that it’s likely not the needle entering the body and its application of the anesthesia that caused the back pains…but it’s possibility moreso as a secondary outcome.

So the epidural is to take away pain for delivery and childbirth, and it does that; but what happens is that it can possibly decrease sensory feedback where the injection was applied, and this causes a poorer back position. Over a period of time, the poor feedback to poor back position causes back pain and strains.

What if I have back pain during AND after pregnancy?

If you hadn’t already delivered your baby, then make an appointment to speak to your gynae – you may require some days off to rest at home before delivery, and they can advise if there’s any specific medication you can take.

You can also seek women’s health physiotherapy treatment to assess and treat your pre- and post-delivery back pains. You may also be prescribed

  • manual therapy
  • gentle exercise therapy
  • mobilization work
  • clinical or matwork pilates
  • hot and cold therapy

All physiotherapy sessions are gentle and aims for zero risks for yourself and your baby.

What other types of pains may I get?

Every mother and pregnant lady is different, some get hip pains, some develop sacroiliac joint problems, some get rashes – best to speak to your gynae to assess and determine the best course of action for you.
